THE WOODLANDS, TX (March 11, 2009) - Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC (Chevron Phillips Chemical) today announced that three of its petrochemical facilities, along with  its ten-site Performance Pipe division, are recipients of the 2008 President's Safety Award - the company's highest safety honor.

"We are proud to present these facilities our President's Safety Award for demonstrating Chevron Phillips Chemical's culture of safety in their day-to-day operations," said Greg Garland, president and CEO. "We take safety and our commitment to an injury and incident-free workplace very seriously. Our goal is zero injuries, which requires that we hold ourselves to high standards for improving safety," Garland said.

Only plant facilities that first receive the company's Safety Excellence Award are eligible to apply for the President's Safety Award. The deciding criteria include low employee and contractor incident rates, certifications or recognition from the industry or their community, and demonstration of year-over-year improvements with the implementation of new and improved safety processes.

Large Petrochemical

Chevron Phillips Chemical's Q-Chem I plant, located in Mesaieed, Qatar,  received the award for the "Large Petrochemical" category for completing the year with an employee recordable incidence rate of 0.21 and a contractor recordable incidence rate of 0.36. Q-Chem I has gone three years without a heat-related injury or illness and to-date has achieved 240 days without a recordable injury or illness. At Port Arthur, the total contractor recordable incidence rate was an impressive 0.31 for the year.

Non-Petrochemical

The entire ten-site Performance Pipe division of Chevron Phillips Chemical won the 2008 President's Safety Award in the "Non-Petrochemical" category by reducing the number of recordable injuries and illnesses by 67 percent and by achieving an 83 percent reduction in total recordable incidence rates over the last eight years.
