Collaborations & Engagement

When it comes to promoting sustainable practices that are good for people and the planet, it truly does “take a village.” That is why Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) is proud to collaborate with organizations across the globe to support worldwide sustainable development.

A key aspect of our overall sustainability strategy is collaboration with organizations that also promote human rights and a healthy planet for all to share. Learn more about the worldwide collaborations and engagements that help CPChem move closer to our sustainable development goals.

Supporting Global Programs

Sustainability is a global challenge, and CPChem seeks out opportunities to support worldwide efforts to improve health, safety and sustainability.

Operation Clean Sweep®

Plastics play an important role to support the development of a more sustainable future, however, mismanaged plastic creates consequences when plastic finds its way into the oceans and natural environment. Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS®) is a product stewardship program created by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Plastics Division and the Plastics Industry Association, with the goal of achieving zero pellet and flake loss to the environment. As an OCS® member, CPChem pledges to uphold the commitments of the program and implement OCS® practices at our facilities across the globe. In the U.S., all CPChem operations follow enhanced OCS® Blue membership guidelines, which involve a deepened commitment to plastic loss reduction and additional program requirements like sharing of best practices, additional reporting and cross-industry collaboration.

Responsible Care®

For our efforts toward a more sustainable future, multiple CPChem facilities have received ACC Responsible Care safety awards. We are especially proud to continually earn Certificates of Excellence, given to facilities with zero fatalities, zero days away from work cases, and zero job transfers or restriction cases. Additionally, our facilities earn Certificates of Honor and Energy Efficiency Awards in recognition of innovations in fuel combustion and energy reuse.

Investing in Sustainability

CPChem provides financial support for initiatives supporting circularity for plastics both locally and abroad. Here are some of the organizations and research and development programs we are investing in today to build a more sustainable tomorrow.

Alliance to End Plastic Waste

Through infrastructure, innovation, education and cleanup, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste is committed to improving plastics collection, sorting and recycling systems, especially in underserved regions. In 2019, CPChem became a founding member of this global consortium of companies which form the Alliance to End Plastic Waste. To date, Alliance members have pledged more than $1 billion and aim to invest at least $1.5 billion to eliminate plastic waste from the environment.

Circulate Capital’s Ocean Fund

Circulate Capital was founded in 2018 with the goal of investing in solutions to address the ocean plastic crisis in South and Southeast Asia. The firm focuses on investing in circular plastics and emerging innovations across global high-growth markets. In early 2023, CPChem joined Circulate Capital for the firm’s second launch, a $65 million program to scale the recycling supply chain, address climate change and improve economies in impacted nations, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Infinity Recycling

Infinity Recycling’s Circular Plastics Fund invests in advanced recycling technologies to create markets for end-of-life waste streams. By investing in the Circular Plastics Fund, CPChem aims to help streamline the transition from a linear to a circular economy, while producing significant and measurable financial and environmental returns.

Closed Loop Partners

Closed Loop Partners launched the Circular Plastics Fund as part of its broader strategy to reduce, reuse and recycle plastics. The fund provides catalytic debt and equity financing, spurring additional mainstream investments into recycling solutions and infrastructure in the U.S. and Canada that can help address bottlenecks in the recycling system for PE, PP and flexible plastics to meet growing demand for high-quality recycled material.

In early 2023, CPChem joined Closed Loop Partners’ Circular Plastics Fund to support the transition towards a circular economy as collaboration will be a key element to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy

Industry Organizations

CPChem participates in several industry trade associations such as the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), Plastics Europe, the World Plastics Council (WPC), and the Texas Chemistry Council (TCC). These trade associations play an important role in representing our industry.

CPChem’s engagement with leading organizations in the chemical industry takes a variety of forms, from membership in trade associations to service on the boards of industry councils and participation on specific committees. Many of our collaborations continue year after year.
