Product Sustainability and Circularity

CPChem develops products and solutions while using resources responsibly. Our robust product portfolio accommodates more than 70,000 consumer and industrial applications. Across the company, we explore and advance opportunities to incorporate sustainability throughout the design and application of our products, and we proudly contribute to efforts that seek to end plastic waste.

We work to harness the benefits of plastics for more than eight billion people who share our planet today, and we innovate to minimize our footprint for the billions we will share it with tomorrow.

"The technological prowess and fervor of our Research and Development teams greatly strengthen our efforts directed toward climate change and enabling circularity. We are working to create more sustainable solutions with long-term benefits that extend beyond our business and into global communities."

key Issues

Less than 10% of the world’s plastic waste is recycled using traditional mechanical means. Because plastic packaging and products are increasing in complexity to meet consumers’ evolving needs, new infrastructure and technologies are needed to repurpose the large volumes of plastic not suitable for standard recycling.

Using advanced recycling, CPChem can convert difficult-to-recycle plastics into feedstocks to produce circular polyethylene resins that offer the same quality and performance as polymers made from conventional fossil feedstock.

Introduced for commercial use in 2022, our Marlex® Anew™ Circular Polyethylene is certified through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS system. We’re targeting an annual production volume of 1 billion pounds per year of Marlex® Anew™ Circular Polyethylene by 2030.

Reduce Product Carbon Footprint

In a circular economy, new products are made from reused and recycled materials, keeping valuable resources in circulation rather than lost to landfill, incineration, or ending up in unintended places. Advancing circularity promotes product stewardship and responsible consumption of resources which can help to reduce a product’s footprint.

CPChem has initiated a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a multi-year exercise to assess the potential environmental impact of its products. Data and results from this process will provide high-value insights into the life cycle of our products and identify areas for improvement.

Efforts to Eliminate Plastic Waste in the Environment

In a circular economy, new products are made from reused and recycled materials, keeping valuable resources in circulation rather than lost to landfill, incineration, or ending up in unintended places. Advancing circularity promotes product stewardship and responsible consumption of resources which can help to lighten a product’s footprint.

For more than 20 years, CPChem has been a member of Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS®), a global initiative targeting zero plastic loss to the environment. In the U.S., all CPChem plastic handling operations follow enhanced OCS® Blue membership guidelines, which involve incremental requirements around pellet loss reduction and additional program features like sharing best practices, enhanced reporting and cross-industry collaboration.

Our OCS® Blue membership demonstrates the company’s progress and determination to keep plastic waste out of the environment, supporting SDG #12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

A key aspect of our overall sustainability strategy is collaboration with organizations across the globe that share our ambition to end plastic pollution. CPChem is also taking steps to be part of the plastic waste solution through financial support of various initiatives,
