Film resins offer aesthetic appeal and flexibility for variety of applications

THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (May 14, 2008) - Ever wonder what makes your Halloween mask stand out in the crowd Or what makes food in the supermarket catch your eye K-Resin® styrene butadiene copolymer (SBC) film resins by Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) are often responsible for your double-take.

K-Resin® SBC can be used as a laminating film, providing gloss and printability to applications as diverse as food packaging, costume masks, and medical supplies.  It is suitable for use in cast and blown film processes, and K-Resin® SBC's broad processing window offers customers manufacturing flexibility.

"The beauty of our film products is in their adaptability," said Cliff Pettey, market director for K-Resin® SBC films. "K-Resin® SBC is compatible in monolayer or multi-layer structures, giving customers the opportunity to choose the properties most important to the application - whether it's clarity, gloss, toughness, printability, or a combination of these qualities."

An example of K-Resin® SBC's usefulness is seen in the products made by French-based company Leygatech. As specialists in blown film, Leygatech uses K-Resin® SBC in monolayer structures for laminating food trays. By using K-Resin® SBC, Leygatech adds aesthetic appeal to its packaging as well as the ability to seal a barrier film, ensuring that the food inside retains optimal freshness.

"The versatility of K-Resin® SBC is paramount to our products," said Jean-Matthieu Brouillat, research and development manager of Leygatech. "The resin's compatibility with polystyrene enables K-Resin® SBC's rigidity to be adjusted, while maintaining its dimensional stability, clarity, and gloss."

"While Leygatech is using K-Resin® SBC for a food packaging application, our film resins are not limited to this particular market segment," said Marc Heerbrant, K-Resin® SBC product development and technical service manager. "Through our Plastics Technical Center, Chevron Phillips Chemical can offer product selection support for both classic and novel applications in a variety of market segments."
